Red Blend, Old Vine Zinfandel, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Syrah, Value wine, $10 Wine, Budget Wine, Wine Enthusiast Best Buy

People drink a lot of wine around the holidays. There are parties with alcohol, fun times to be had, guests to entertain and stress to go along with it. All of this says "adult beverage", but drinking also just seems like the thing to do at this time of year. You can easily find articles about how and why to limit your drinking this holiday season, but I'm not going to do that. Instead, I'm going to tell you about a wine that you and yours will really, really enjoy drinking this holiday season (and every other time of year)! Yes, I'm going to encourage you to drink. The Bogle 2014 Essential Red, at least.

It's not just me that thinks this wine is outstanding for the price. The Bogle 2014 Essential Red was awarded 90 points by Wine Enthusiast, and the 2013 Essential Red was awarded 89 points and called a "Best Buy". Wine Spectator published an article on its blog calling it one of the two best red blends on the market right now. Pretty impressive considering that the other blend costs $20 a bottle!

Not only is the wine impressive, Bogle Winery is, as well. They have made a commitment to sustainability, earning the California Sustainable Certified Winegrowing certification for the vineyards and winery operation and Lodi Rules Green Certification for their estate vineyards. The Essential Red is made from their old vine zinfandel and blended with their syrah, cabernet sauvignon and petite sirah. It's a combination that makes for a super smooth and flavorful wine!

http://www.boglewinery.com/our-wines/wine-profiles/bogle-essential-red/Bogle Winery describes their wine well, saying about the 2014 Essential Red

"Richly textured fruit of dark berries and black plums is nuanced by the flavors of juniper and dried herbs. The juicy, jammy fruit is framed with spicy cedar and hints of pipe tobacco and cocoa as the American oak lingers through the aging of 12 long months.  Luscious from start to finish, this wine is easy to drink, but impossible to forget."

When Wine Enthusiast rated the 2013 Essential Red 89 points, it was described as:

"Welcoming and easy to drink, this full-bodied wine has mellow, ripe fruit flavors, light oaky accents and a warm sense of ripeness that doesn't go over the top. Subtle tannins support the texture while keeping it smooth."

Remember that the Bogle 2014 Essential Red was awarded 90 points. No wonder its called a "Best Buy." It's a great wine for $10!

Out of all of the professional descriptions, the one by Bogle Winery seems to me to describe the Bogle 2014 Essential Red best. I find that the aroma is dominated by dark berries, black plums and vanilla. The dark berries and vanilla carry into the flavor but are complimented by cedar and tobacco. I find this wine incredibly easy to drink. The Wine Spectator blog article says that the Bogle 2014 Essential Red has a touch more residual sugar than most dry reds, enough to make it approachable but not sweet. Well said, Wine Spectator. I think this is one of the things that makes the Bogle Essential Red so smooth!

If you are looking for a fantastic red wine that will appeal to a wide variety of tastes and compliment a variety of foods, and a wine that tastes like it costs a lot  more than it does, you have to give the Bogle 2014 Essential Red a try!
